The disregard of our unique differences made me think about a philosophy that I had learned while in South Africa: “Ubuntu”. I wanted my nieces to understand the importance of this word and apply it to their daily lives.

Many of us encounter those inner thoughts that tell us that we cannot accomplish a goal or be successful in pursuing our dreams. We may say words like “I can’t do that”, “I can’t follow my passion because…” or like the 5th grader wrote, “I am not smart enough”.

Engaging in projects outside the classroom, enhanced my learning experiences and encouraged me to think abstractly. It is important to go outside the textbook and even the classroom, to give students practical experiences. This allows them to apply what they are learning to real life, and is what authentic learning is all about!

...I eventually came to the realization that I was only hurting myself in the end. I knew that I needed to take corrective actions and find the perfect solution to face my fears. I needed to abandon my own comfort zone and venture out into what I call the “ZONE OF THE UNKNOWN”.

...I also understand the social responsibility that also comes with such a privilege. As a young person who has been fortunate to travel different parts of the world, I must utilize these experiences to inspire other youth to expand their horizons beyond their local communities.
